Shikhar Dhawan guides DC to top of table, Mayank’s 99* goes in vain

Delhi Capitals defeated KL Rahul-less Punjab Kings by 7 wickets in IPL 2021, with Shikhar Dhawan guiding the chase with an unbeaten 69 not out at Ahmedabad on Sunday. The win took Delhi Capitals to the top of the table, with 12 points, having won 6 games out of 8. Mayank Agarwal, captaining Punjab Kings in absence of KL Rahul who was out due to appendicitis, anchored his team’s score to 166/6 with 99 not out.

Dhawan-Prithvi make chase easy for Delhi Capitals

Dhawan and his fellow opener Prithvi Shaw once again provided a quick start of 63 in 6 overs before the latter fell for 22-ball 39. But Dhawan ensured he was there till the end to get 2 points for his team. He was supported by Steve Smith’s 24, and Shimron Hetmyer’s cameo of 4-ball 16 not out.

Earlier, asked to bat first, Mayank, who was captaining for the first time in IPL, began cautiously before blazing away in the death overs. He was batting at run-a-ball before ending up with 58-ball 99 not out with 8 fours and 4 sixes. He was adjudged man of the match although his knock went in vain. Punjab is placed 6th with 6 points from 8 games, having won 3 matches.

Mayank Agarwal became the third player in IPL to be stranded on 99 not out. The other two players are Suresh Raina and Chris Gayle.

There are also have been four instances when a batsman has been dismissed for 99 in IPL. The players are Virat Kohli, Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, and Chris Gayle.
