Recently, Gautam Gambhir said that he believes Kohli has won nothing big and still needs to achieve more as the captain of the Indian cricket team. The former Indian batsman feels that though Kohli is a phenomenal cricketer, he had not achieved much in bigger tournaments as the captain.
Though Kohli had been a spectacular batsman for the last few years and has broken numerous records, he has no achievement as the captain. Kohli has shown fierce leadership skills that have been praised by all cricketers. He has, at the same time, failed to lead the Indian cricket team in any of the ICC tournaments that were held in his career of three years.
Recently, on the show ‘Cricket Connected’ on Star Sports, Goutam Gambhir spoke about the failure of the Indian captain Kohli and said, “In a team sport, you can keep scoring your own runs. There are people like Brian Lara, who’s got so many runs, you’ve got people like Jacques Kallis, who have won nothing.”
Gambhir talks about Virat
Adding about the achievements of Virat he added, “Virat Kohli, at the moment has won nothing, to be honest, as a leader,”
Goutam Gambhir and Virat Kohli were part of the 2011 India’s World Cup-winning squad where they shared a crucial 83 run partnership against Sri Lanka.
“He has a lot to achieve. He can keep scoring his own runs, but for me, I think in a team sport, till the time you don’t win the big trophies, you will never be able to fulfil your entire career,” he added.
However, to cool things down, Goutam Gambhir compared Kohli and Rohit Sharma and said Kohli has the ability to rotate a strike in a brilliant way that Rohit can’t. “Even Rohit Sharma does not have that quality which Virat Kohli has, to rotate the strike. Rohit Sharma has the ability to hit the big shots, but that is why Virat Kohli is more consistent than Rohit Sharma. Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers also do not have the ability to rotate strike off each delivery against spin bowling. Virat Kohli has that, which is why he is so successful,” Gambhir added.
Kohli has led India to the World Cup semi-finals in 2019. In the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017, Kohli led India to the finals. Even with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, a runners-up spot was achieved by the team. However, it is for a fact that Virat has not won any big tournament as the captain.
