The future of cricket remains uncertain with the ongoing pandemic
T20 World Cup is speculated to be cancelled

High possibilities that T20 World Cup is cancelled, says Pakistan Cricket Board Chief!

Breaking millions of hearts of the cricket fans, Pakistan Cricket Board Chief, Ehsan Mani has said that there are high chances that the T20 World Cup is cancelled this year. Previously, it was predicted that the T20 World Cup will be held later this year in Australia.

Cricket Australia chairman, Earl Eddings has recently conceded that it would very difficult to arrange the tournament this year and seemed ‘unrealistic’ to fly in 16 teams to the country.

“I would say it is unlikely…trying to get (teams from) 16 countries into Australia when most countries are still going through COVID spiking is unrealistic or very, very difficult,” CA chairman Eddings said on Tuesday.

Soon after, Ehsan Mani, who is also the head of ICC’s Finance and Commercial Rights Committee said that the T20 World Cup was not possible to arrange.

“We have had a lot of discussions and the feeling is it (T20 World Cup) would not be possible this year. ICC has World Cups lined up in 2021 and 2023, so we have a gap year where we can adjust this event,” Mani told reporters.

“God forbid if some player(s) falls ill or mishap occurs during the tournament, it will have a big impact and create panic in the cricket world and we can’t take that risk,” Mani added.

He also said that the biggest hurdle lies because of the government who is very conscious of the pandemic.he also added that if the event is held it would take place in a bio-bubble environment within empty stadiums.

“Having a bio-bubble environment is feasible for say a bilateral series like Pakistan in England, but it is very difficult when 16 teams are involved,” the PCB chief added.

Future of cricket

Last week, ICC held a board meeting and said that the decision for hosting the T20 World Cup is still pending and will be taken next month. The cricket body also said that it is considering certain contingency plans and taking care of every possibility.

Some are speculating that if the T20World Cup is cancelled then that would create an opportunity for the hosting of IPL. Mani added that the ICC conference call is scheduled for the next week and it would be certainly known after that if T20 World Cup is cancelled.

These speculations have added to the uncertainty of the tournament. T20 World Cup was scheduled in October-November but due to the emerging pandemic, it can be a risky step. With travel restrictions between nations, it would be difficult to host such a magnanimous event. As of now, it can’t be said for sure if the T20 World Cup is cancelled.
