Since the introduction of the White Ball format, One Day Internationals has witnessed numerous top batsmen making their marks in its scoreboard with their muscular power and breathtaking talents and creating individual highest score in ODI.
In the history of ODI, the first match in this format was played in between Australia and England in 40 eight ball overs. Ever since the world has witnessed numerous records been created and broken in the One Day format. In the antiquity of modern times, many cricketers have scored massive runs that were once thought to be impossible to achieve. As the competition became more intense, the hunger to achieve more scores also increased drastically.
While previously scoring just a hundred was a benchmark in itself, today the highest score in ODI by an individual has crossed 250. 11. Sir Vivian Richards: 189 (West Indies vs England, 1984)
Any list that commends batsmen cannot be complete without the mention of Sir Vivian Richards. The legendary batsman created history by scoring an unbeaten 189 in just 170 balls in the historical innings. The left-handed batsman came into the field when the Windies has just lost two early wickets. With a strike rate of 111.18, Viv Richards smashed 5 sixes and 21 fours in the single innings.
According to the spectators, they have never witnessed a batsman score such runs with that ease. West Indies scored 272 runs in the innings out of which 189 was scored by Sir Vivian Richards alone. He scored 70% of the Windies’ total in the match. With this match, Viv made the record of scoring the highest score in ODI individual batting at number 4. He has appeared in total 187 ODISs for the Windies and scored 6, 721 runs. He has an average of 47 with 11 centuries and 45 half-centuries.
10. Saeed Anwar, 194 (Pakistan vs India, 1997)
In Pakistan’s tour of India, 1997, the spectators witnessed history in making. The former Pakistani opener, Saeed Anwar was in his attacking form and made sure the Indian bowlers were cleaned from the pitch. The game took place in the harsh conditions of Chennai, where the extremely challenging conditions did not stop the left-handed batsman from scoring a magnificent strike rate of 132.88.
Anwar scored 194 in just 146 balls, falling short of just 6 runs to become the first batsman to score a double century in the history of cricket, scoring an individual highest score in ODI. He dominated the Indian batting line up and smashed 21 fours and 5 sixes in the innings. The Pakistani team scored a massive total of 327 for 5 wickets and defeated India by 35 runs. Anwar held the highest score in ODI by an individual for 13 years till the year 2020. He has played 55 Tests and scored 4, 052 in the Test format and played 247 ODI matches with a record of 8, 824 runs.
9. Charles Coventry*, 194 (Zimbabwe vs Bangladesh, 2009)
Charles Coventry, the Zimbabwean cricketer scored the highest score in ODI by an individual at the Queen Sports Club on August 16, 2009, and equalled Saeed Anwar’s record made in 1997. It was a tough time for the team of Zimbabwe when Coventry came on the field to bat with a score of 5/1. With an impressive strike rate of 124. 35, he scored an unbeaten 194 off 156 balls. He smashed 16 fours and 7 sixes in the innings and missed a double century in the last over.
Coventry holds the highest score in ODI individual in an innings batting at number 3. But unfortunately, he is also the scorer of the highest runs in an innings on a losing side. Zimbabwe’s bowling lineup was not up to the mark and did not give justice to the magnificent batsman’s performance. The team lost the match to Bangladesh by 4 wickets while 13 balls were still remaining. Coventry had a short career that consisted of 2 Test matches and 39 ODI matches. He has scored 88 in his Test career and 831 in the ODI.
8. Sachin Tendulkar*, 200 (India vs South Africa, 2010)
Cricket fans witnessed the making of history when the Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar blessed his fans by scoring a double century in an ODI match, making the highest score in ODI by individual. He was the first batsman to score a double century in an ODI match and scored a knock of 200. With a run rate of 136.05, Tendulkar smashed the powerful bowlers of South Africa like Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis, Charl Langeveldt.
The bowling lineup seemed to be smashed all over the ground as the God of Cricket hit 25 fours and 3 sixes. Scoring a 200 in just 147 balls, Sachin was the first man on earth to hold a record in an international game. His score helped India reach a mammoth total of 401 for the loss of just 3 wickets in the 50 overs match and finally defeat South Africa by a huge margin of 153 runs.
The Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior was the place of envy for the cricket overs, another reason being, on the same day, 12 years earlier, Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli made a mammoth score of 664, then a world record, in a school match.
7. Rohit Sharma*, 208 (India vs Sri Lanka, Mohali, 2017)
Rohit Sharma, the ferocious Indian batsman scored an unbeaten knock of 208 runs just off 153 balls and became the only batsman in the world to score 3 double centuries in the ODI form of cricket. In the Sri Lanka tour of India, during the first ODI, Rohit Sharma got out for just 2 as India was defeated by Sri Lanka by 7 wickets with 176 balls remaining.
On 13th December 2017, India was playing the second ODI of the series when the “Hitman” came on the field and made a record-breaking score of 208 from just 153 balls. India made a total score of 392/4 and won the match by a massive margin of 141 runs. Raining 13 fours and 12 sixes with a strike rate of 135.94, he made his mark in the ODI format. Rohit scored the last 100 runs in mere 36 balls.
6. Rohit Sharma, 209 (India vs Australia, 2013)
Following the 7th position in the list of the highest score in ODI by an individual, Rohit holds the sixth position given to his spectacular performance in the Australia tour of India, 2013. On 2nd November, the match was the series decider and was being held in the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Rohit Sharma won the hearts of millions of cricket fans by scoring a massive 209 in just 158 balls with a lightning strike rate of 132.27.
It was Rohit’s first of the three 200s that he scored in his ODI career and helped India score a total of 383/6. His attack guided India to win the series against its arch-rival. The right-handed batsman trashed Australia’s bowling line-up by smashing 16 sixes. Another interesting fact about this match is Rohit holds the record for hitting the most number of sixes in an innings by an individual.
5. Fakhar Zaman, 210 (Pakistan vs Zimbabwe, 2018)
On 20th July 2018, Fakhar Zaman became the first Pakistani batsman to score a double century in the ODI format of cricket, making the highest score in ODI by individual. With an explosive strike rate of 134.61, Zaman has made a 210 run off 156 balls to his name. He smashed 25 fours and 5 sixes and shattered the weak and tedious bowling line-up that Zimbabwe portrayed.
Pakistan, under his guidance, reached a total of 399 for the loss of just a single cricket. The left-handed batsman had a record-breaking partnership with Imam-ul-Haq of 308 runs and helped Pakistan win the game by a gigantic margin of 244 runs.
4. Chris Gayle, 215 (West Indies vs Zimbabwe, 2015)
Christopher Henry Gayle, the monstrous batsman, became the first-ever batsman to score a double century in the World Cups. Gayle scored 215 runs off just 147 balls against the very feeble Zimbabwe team. On 24th February 2015, the cricket fans witnessed a rain of fours and sixes in the Canberra stadium.
Chris Gayle hit 10 fours and 16 sixes and thus equalled the previous score of Rohit Sharma of hitting the most number of sixes in an innings. West Indies dramatically lost their first wicket at 0 when Dwayne Smith got out. Chris Gayle came on the field and showered the “Gayle Storm” which was accompanied by Marlon Samuel’s 133* for 156 balls that saved the game.
They shared a partnership of 372 runs which is the highest partnership in ODIs at any wicket and he held the highest score in ODI by an individual, at that time. They ended up scoring the whole teams total together and defeated Zimbabwe’s team by 73 runs, D/L method.
3. Virender Sehwag, 219 (India vs West Indies, 2011)
On 8th December 2011, Virender Sehwag became the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to score a double hundred in the ODI cricket. Sehwag was the stand-in captain for the series and thus scored the individual highest score in an innings as a captain. The aggressive right-handed opener smashed 219 off just 149 balls, with an unbelievable strike rate of 146.97.
He struck 25 fours and 7 sixes in every possible nook and corner of the Holker Stadium, Indore.
In the 50 overs quota, India scored a magnificent score of 418/5 which till date remains Inia’s highest score in ODI cricket. India won the match easily against the Windies by a margin of 153 runs, special thanks to Viru’s historic performance.
2. Martin Guptill, 237 (New Zealand vs West Indies, 2015)
The second player on this list is New Zealand’s star opening batsman, Martin Guptill. Guptill scored a gigantic score of 237 from just 163 balls and thus became the first Kiwi batsman to score a double century in the ODI. the match was an extremely crucial World Cup Quarter-Final.
It was taking place in Wellington where Guptill guided the team to a mammoth total of 393/6. This in turn helped them to reach the semi-finals. With such a brilliant score, the New Zealand team defeated the Windies by a margin of 143 runs. He broke the record of scoring the highest individual score in the World Cups as well as the highest score in ODI individual.
1. Rohit Sharma, 264 (India vs West Indies, 2014)
13th November 2014 will always be the date remembered by the cricket lovers from all over the world when Rohit Sharma scored the highest individual score in ODI form of cricket. The Indian vice-captain was back in the team after a long injury and the venue was his favourite ground, the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. In unimaginable innings of 173 balls, Rohit scored a massive 264 runs with a strike rate of 152.63.
In the same innings, the “Hitman” also broke the record of an individual to hit the most number of boundaries in ODI. he has hit total 42 boundaries, 33 fours and 9 sixes in the single innings. He faced 173 balls, the most number of balls a batsman has ever faced in a single 50-over ODI format.
He helped India score a total of 404/5. India as expected, won the match by 153 runs as Sri Lanka got all out for 251 runs, which was 13 runs less than Rohit’s. The second-highest second-highest score in the innings was that of Virat Kohli’s, which was 66, 198 lesser than Rohit’s.
