IPL 2020 Match Schedule yet to be Announced, Rumors surge social media

5 mins read :

IPL 2020 Match Schedule is all set to happen in September-November. Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, world cricket has suffered to a great extent. Many tournaments were cancelled since March, including international tournaments, IPL, Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.

After the grim news of the postponement of the T20 World Cup was announced on Monday, cricket lovers from all over the world were heartbroken. However, the Indian fans looked this as an opportunity for the most awaited series, IPL.  Agreeing to which, on Friday, 24th July, the IPL governing council chairman, Brijesh Patel confirmed that the tournament will be held in the UAE, pending all the government clearances.

IPL is set to chalk out the details

However, the IPL 2020 match schedule has not been decided yet. The governing council of the tournament is all set to meet next week to approve the schedule as well as the final details. “The GC will meet shortly but we have finalised the schedule. It will run from September 19 to November 8. We expect the government approval to come through. It is a full 51-day IPL,” Patel confirmed.

IPL has been only made possible after the ICC decided to postpone the Twenty20 World Cup, that was scheduled to happen in October-November to the next year as Australia, who was supposed to host the tournament has recently expressed its concerns and inability to conduct the event due to the emerging threat of the pandemic.

Patel also added that the standard protocols necessary for fighting the COVID-19 threat is still being prepared and in due time BCCI will write to the Emirates Cricket Board formally.

“We are making the SOP and it will be ready in a few days. To allow crowd or not depends on the UAE government. Anyway, social distancing has to be maintained. We have left it for their government to decide on that. Will also be writing to the UAE board formally,” Patel said.

Venue for IPL

The venue for the tournament is yet not disclosed. However, the UAE has three grounds, Dubai International Stadium, Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the historical Sharjah Ground. It is learnt from a trusted source that the BCCI will also be renting the ICC Academy for the players’ practice. The ICC Academy has 38 turf pitches, 6 indoor pitches, an outdoor conditioning area of 5, 700 square foot and two full-sized cricket grounds.

Health Protocols

It is thought that the BCCI has chosen the UAE as the venue to host IPL as it has simpler quarantine protocols. The current health protocols of Dubai needs no two-weeks of quarantine if someone is carrying a negative test result of the infectious virus. If someone is not carrying the test results, he or she must undergo the test.

As previously, there were speculations that the IPL will start from September 26, BCCI has moved the tournament a week ahead as it will not jeopardise the team’s tour to Australia.

“The Indian team will have a mandatory quarantine of 14 days as per the Australian government rules. A delay would have sent the plans haywire,” a BCCI official said on conditions of anonymity.

“The best part is that 51 days is not at all a curtailed period and broadcasters will be happy with full seven-week window,” he added. While the original schedule had five double-headers, Patel said the new one will feature around 12 double-headers which means two matches each on both Saturdays and Sundays.

After the announcement of the postponement of the IPL 2020 schedule, Pakistani former players, Shoaib Akhtar and Rashid Latiff had accused the BCCI of foul play in postponing the T20 World Cup.
