Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) opening batsman Shubman Gill has come under the scanner for his poor show with the bat.
Shubman Gill has been going through a rough patch with the bat in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). And his poor show is affecting the overall team performance too. In the seven games he has played so far in IPL 2021, he has only managed to put up 132 runs at an average of 18.85 and a strike rate of 117.85. Seeing this performance of Gill, former England captain Kevin Pietersen has said that the youngster needs to get busy at the crease as well.
Along with this, Gill has been facing another problem as he has not managed to clear the fence many times. He just has 14 fours and five sixes so far this year. Pietersen further added that Gill cannot afford to be lazy.
“Let’s talk a little bit about Shubman Gill because I think that guy is so good. I absolutely love him as a player. I’ve been watching him quite closely recently and I think Gill needs to get a little busy at the crease. If he can do that, he can then get himself going. He just seems so lazy,” Pietersen was quoted as saying to Star Sports.
“I’d just like him to get a little bit busier and more proactive” – Kevin Pietersen on Shubman Gill
“Some of his dismissals are really low and it looks like he doesn’t really fit the speed of the game. You can get very lazy and I think he’s too lazy at the moment. He’s too accommodating. I’d just like him to get a little bit busier and more proactive. Then he won’t miss those balls on his legs and start hitting them. I want to see purpose when he bats,” he further added.
Notably, Shubman Gill has had a decent start to his Test career and played an important role in India’s 2-1 victory over Australia earlier this year as well. In the seven Tests he has played for India, he has three fifties with a top-score of 91 as well.
Meanwhile, after the loss against Delhi Capitals, KKR captain Eoin Morgan said: “Very disappointed. We were slow off the blocks with the bat, lost wickets in the middle period and Russell got us to 150-plus. Then got slow off the blocks with the ball. Shaw played brilliantly, nothing much we could do. Also shows how good the surface was. We weren’t good enough with all departments. He (Cummins) is part of our new ball plans.
Mavi bowled four on the trot last game and bowled well. Just didn’t go to plan today. You need to be honest and realistic with everyone in the dressing room. We have to be as honest as we can with each other. Hopefully, we can turn things around. There is a huge amount of talent in our squad but talent alone doesn’t get you far. It’s about execution.”
