Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner, who was about to feature in the upcoming home T20I series against England is in doubt as he couldn’t do well in the fitness tests, as per the report in Cricbuzz.
As we all know, how fitness matters in recent times for every player. Moreover, the new fitness bar has set for players where they are required to either complete a 2 km run in 8.5 minutes or scoring 17.1 in the Yo-Yo test as well.
It is also noteworthy that, Varun Chakravarthy was earlier included in the T20I squad for India’s tour of Australia as well after his stunning show in last year’s Indian Premier League in the UAE for Kolkata Knight Riders. But, he was pulled out later owing to his shoulder injury.
However, he was under rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore to cure his injury, after which he was added to the squad for the series against England which will be played in Ahmedabad. However, he has reportedly said to the website that he has not received any information from the board yet.
Varun Chakravarthy has so far played 13 games in IPL 2020 where he claimed 17 wickets which came at an economy of 6.84. Even, his fitness has often come under the scanner too as he has played only 1 first-class and 9 List A matches for Tamil Nadu till date as well.
Varun was about to quit his cricketing career and started his career in architecture. But, in his mid-20s, he once again returned to the action as a mystery spinner after working very hard on his spin bowling in the tennis ball circuit.
Soon, he got the chance to play in the fourth division in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association League and became a star in the Tamil Nadu Premier League as well. From there, he was bought by Kings XI Punjab in the cash-rich IPL in 2019 but could only manage only one game due to injury issues.
However, his luck favoured when he was shifted to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2020 which helped him to come in the limelight. And, his unique bowling action earned him a nationl call-up in the shortest format as well.
As far as the series is concerned, India and England will play the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad before the five T20Is will take place from March 12 to 20 at the same venue.
