Former India player Rahul Dravid has been appointed as the head coach of India’s limited-overs squads for their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka in July.
This decision came in place as Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and batting coach Vikram Rathour will be absent. Notably, they will all be with the Test squad in the UK from early June for the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) final and then the five-match Test series against England.
India are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for three-match ODI series and as many T20I series as well from July 13 to 27. A second-string squad will tour there because 20 of India’s top players and four standbys will be in England at the same time. On the other hand, Rahul Dravid has already coached several India A and Under-19 teams over the last few years and players will be familiar to him as well.

Notably, Rahul Dravid is currently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He has played a key role in making the younger players of the Indian sides who trained under him at the A and Under-19 levels. Currently, they are doing well in international matches as well. Even, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had also applauded his former team-mate for doing a “great job at the NCA” as well. And, Dravid moved from being the head coach of the A and Under-19 teams to the director of cricket at the NCA in 2019 as well.
Since the series will take place amid the crunch time of COVID-19, the series will take place without crowds and the safety of the teams’ bubbles will be intact as well. Meanwhile, the Sooriyawewa ground near Hambantota as well as the stadium in Dambulla is the frontrunner to host the series as well. Notably, India last travelled to Sri Lanka in 2018 for the Nidahas T20 tri-series as well.
