After the fourth and final Test against England in Ahmedabad, both team will take on each other in a five-match T20I series. For that, Team India addded three new faces to the squad – Rahul Tewatia, Surya Kumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan.
However, after the call-up, Haryana’s Rahul Tewatia’s probable debut looks slim as the all-rounder has failed to clear the fitness test recently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) has made the test mandatory for every player to be eligible for selection. Notably, Rahul came into the limelight after a stunning season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and got rewarded as well.
On the other hand, according to a report in The Telegraph, alongside Tewatia, spinner Varun Chakravarthy too has failed the fitness test and his selection remains uncertain in the upcoming T20I series against England too.
As per BCCI’s new selection rules and parameters, it has become mandatory for the players to clear one of the two tests – either they have to score 17:1 in the Yo-yo test or covering 2km in 8.3 minutes to be eligible for selection in the team as well.
Varun Chakravarthy too had a great season last year in the cash-rich IPL where he played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and performed quite well. He earned his maiden call-up for the T20I series against Australia in 2020. But, he had to miss the series due to his injury.
However, both Rahul Tewatia and Varun Chakravarthy will get a second chance to prove their fitness and endurance levels along with other player who also failed the fitness test. As many as 30 cricketers participate in the test, including the likes of veteran Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, T. Natarajan, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan alongside others.
The five-match T20I series will begin from March 12.
Meanwhile, their inclusion in the playing XI will give their respective franchises the much-needed boost which can be crucial too to win the title this season as well.
